Le Beurre Bordier, Oignon de Roscoff

One sunny afternoon, I showed up to my friend Gary’s house for a butter tasting, but not just any butter, this was Le Beurre Bordier. Smooth and rich with a luxurious mouthfeel and best experienced with fresh crisp radishes and flaky salt. While I did enjoy the plain version of the butter, the Oignon de Roscoff was by far my favorite. It was sweet, well rounded, and a flavor that I find myself contemplating from time to time.

On a separate occasion I happened upon @vintageremeinders viral post on her collection of butter pats. I was dumbfounded mostly because I had a collection of 3 different kinds of butter pats but had no idea what they were. And here’s the thing, vintage shopping, thrifting and antiquing are my super power.

Butter Pat Collection

According to the Journal of Antiques and Collectibles, butter pats are also referred to as butter chips or butters. They were first produced in the 1800s for use at formal and elaborate dinner settings. And after a little more research, I was relieved to learn that there lies difficulties in identifying butter pats because they are sometimes misidentified as children’s toys.

Needless to say I’m excited and I find myself looking forward to future thrifting adventures, wondering what I'll add to my collection. The next butter tasting is sure to be that much more enjoyable with butter pats in use. Now to figure out what delicious brands of butter to taste!
